Words-to-Time Calculator
Convert a word count into speaking, reading and typing time at your chosen pace — or work backwards to find how many words fill a 5, 10 or 20-minute talk.

The math behind a words-to-time calculator is simple: time = word count ÷ words per minute (wpm). The only thing that changes the answer is the pace you choose, which is why the tool lets you set your own wpm instead of locking you into one number.
It applies four common paces so you can see every use case at once. Speaking defaults to about 130 wpm — the natural rate for a clear presentation. Reading aloud sits near 150 wpm. Silent reading averages around 230 wpm, which is what you want for "how long to read" an article or blog post. Typing uses roughly 40 wpm to estimate drafting time.
To go the other way — from a time limit to a word count — the calculator simply multiplies: words = minutes × wpm. Enter "5 minute speech" at 130 wpm and it returns about 650 words. Adjust the pace slider and every figure updates live, so you can match it to how fast you actually talk or read.
Worked example
Say you've written a conference talk that comes to 1,300 words and you want to know if it fits a 10-minute slot.
- Speaking time at 130 wpm: 1,300 ÷ 130 = 10.0 minutes — a perfect fit, with no buffer.
- Speak a little faster, at 150 wpm: 1,300 ÷ 150 = 8.7 minutes, leaving about 80 seconds for pauses, slide changes or a question.
- Silent reading time at 230 wpm: 1,300 ÷ 230 = 5.7 minutes — useful if the same script will also be published as an article.
Working backwards: for a tight 5-minute speech you'd trim the script to 5 × 130 = 650 words, and for a 20-minute keynote you'd expand to 20 × 130 = 2,600 words. Always shave 5–10% off to leave room for breathing and audience reaction.
Frequently asked questions
- How many words is a 5 minute speech?
- At an average speaking pace of 130 words per minute, a 5 minute speech is about 650 words. If you speak slowly and deliberately (about 110 wpm) you'll need roughly 550 words; if you speak fast (about 160 wpm) closer to 800 words. Aim for the lower end so you have room to pause.
- How many words per minute do people speak?
- Most people speak between 120 and 160 words per minute. A measured, presentation-style delivery sits around 130 wpm, conversational speech around 150 wpm, and audiobook narration is often slowed to 150–160 wpm for clarity. Set your own pace in the tool to get an exact figure.
- How long does it take to read a given number of words?
- Silent reading averages about 230 words per minute, so 1,000 words takes roughly 4.3 minutes to read. Reading aloud is slower (around 150 wpm), so the same 1,000 words takes about 6.7 minutes. The calculator shows both silent reading and read-aloud times side by side.
- How many words is a 10 minute or 20 minute speech?
- At 130 words per minute, a 10 minute speech is about 1,300 words and a 20 minute speech is about 2,600 words. Subtract words for any slides, demos, Q&A or deliberate pauses, since those eat into your speaking time without adding to the word count.
- Does this speech word count calculator save my text?
- No. Everything runs locally in your browser — your word count and any text you paste are never uploaded or stored on a server. You can use it offline once the page has loaded.
- How do I work backwards from a time limit to a word count?
- Multiply your time limit in minutes by your speaking pace in words per minute. For a 3 minute talk at 130 wpm that's 3 × 130 = 390 words. The tool does this automatically when you enter a target duration instead of a word count.
